Shalom

Goal of Shalom Program To improve the quality of life of persons and families living with life-limiting illnesses like HIV/ AIDS, cancer, organ failure and neurological diseases by providing total, holistic care that includes physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the people it serves.

Background of Shalom Delhi, a unit of EHA: Shalom Delhi, a Palliative Care Unit of Emmanuel Hospital Association, was started in 2001 to care of people living with HIV. In 2011 its services were expanded to provide care for people with other life limiting illnesses like cancer. It targets those people in society who are marginalized, as they are the ones who find it hardest to access care. It adopts a comprehensive approach in its provision of care, seeking to address the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of its clients and their families. It has a multi-disciplinary team of staff members, providing care both in the hospital through a Medical Care Program and at home through a Home-Based Care Program. An Adolescent Program for adolescents growing up in families with HIV/AIDS helps mitigate the impact of the epidemic in their lives and provides opportunities for them to develop in a wholesome manner. A Transgender Program offers medical and home-based care services for transgenders with HIV, who are a highly marginalized group. A Livelihood Program provides opportunities for women affected with HIV or cancer to reconstruct their livelihood through opportunities that provide a fair income, and in conditions that are easily accessible, flexible, and supportive to their needs. The different programs complement each other and work together to constitute the Palliative Care Service provided by Shalom. Through its patient-centered, compassionate, and competent services, Shalom has provided and is continuing to provide much-needed palliative care for highly marginalized and under-served sections of urban society.
Currently, Shalom is the only Care Centre left in all of Delhi that provides medical and comprehensive care for people living with HIV. We invite you to consider supporting this work so that people living with HIV and cancer will continue to have a place where they are cared for with dignity and love.
